Sports 2016/2017

On Friday 30th June, four of our children Seth J, Oliver N, Maisie W and Lilly G represented the school in the sport of badminton, competing in the finals of the Cornwall Games in Bude. Having won through from the heats at, the children put on a fabulous performance against some formidable opponents, some having previously played badminton for the county.
We are extremely proud of how our team performed, despite not winning any medals on the day, they proved to be great sports and their behaviour was impeccable. A huge well done to them all.
 Quad kids 2017
On Thursday 27th a team of 8 athletes from St Stephens, attended an inter -school competition (Quad kids) at, alongside other local schools.
Each child had to complete a 75m sprint, a 600m run, a standing long jump and throw a vortex as far as they could. Each event produced a score for each child, which when added produced an overall total for the team. Our athletes put on a fantastic performance and particular mention must go to Katy P, who stepped in at the last minute as reserve.
At the end of the afternoon, the children were all gathered together for the results and I am delighted to say that St Stephens finished in !st place. Huge congratulations to everyone involved, we are very proud of you.The teams will meet again on May the 18th, along with year 3/4 teams to compete in the same events, with the opportunity to go forward to the final later in the summer. Fingers crossed!
Mini Olympics 2016/17
On Thursday 27th April, alongside the Quad KIds competition, the children from year 6 and some of the children from year 5, had the opportunity to take part in a Mini Olympic event, alongside children from other local primary schools at The children were split into teams and given the name of a country to represent, whilst they competed in a series of fun activities. Amongst others there was a three legged race, a welly throwing event, an obstacle course and an event where the children had to carry water around a course, without spilling any, so that they could fill a container as quickly as possibly. Some children managed to get themselves a bit wet, namely George D! Luckily the sun was shining and the children all had a fabulous afternoon. All the participants were awarded a certificate of participation. Many thanks to  for organising such a fabulous event.
   Sport's hall athletics competition 2017
On Wednesday of last week, a team of our year 3/4 and year 5/6 children, visited to take part in the annual, Sport's hall athletics competition. With the winning school in each age group, going forward to represent our local area in the final  in a few weeks time, the children keen to do their very best. Competing in a variety of track and field events, such as sprint relays, obstacle relays, long jump and speed bounce, the children put on an impressive performance.
During the morning, it was an opportunity of the year 3/4 children to compete and they certainly did us proud, coming a very respectable 3rd in the competition. After lunch, the year 5/6's took their turn and at the end of an afternoon of closely fought competition, the results were in. St Stephen's and Bishop Cornish had tied for 1st place with 146 points.
Unfortunately, only one team were able to proceed forward to the final, so a decision was made to have one final relay race, 2 boys and 2 girls, to decide who should go through. It was a difficult decision to select only 4 children from our team to represent us in this important deciding race. Sadly, despite putting in a magnifigant effort, we were eventually pipped at the post, by the smallest of margins and therefore Bishop Cornish will be representing our local area in the final. We wish them the very best of luck.
Despite their disappointment, our children displayed truely sporting behaviour, as well as incredible athletism and we are extremely proud of their efforts and we will be back next year! Congratulations to all who took part.

High 5 Netball

The 2016-2017 Saltash Primary Cluster High 5 Netball League took place over the winter months. Scores were very close, with SRG winning the league with 22 points and a draw for second place between Landulph and St Stephens with 21 points. Caradon Sportshall Athletics CSG Qualifier January 11th 2017

This is such a great fun competition. Teams of 18 (9 boys and 9 girls) from each school compete in both track and field events in the sportshall at The Y3/4 competition saw 5 schools take part—SRG, Burraton, St Stephens, Bishop Cornish and Landulph . Eventual winners were Burraton who will represent ARENA at the Spring CSG  in April. The Y5/6 competition was attended by Landulph, St Stephens, Burraton and Bishop Cornish. The scores were so close that there were joint winners – Bishop Cornish and St Stephens. As only one team can be selected for the finals, it was decided that the fairest way was to run another 4 x 1 relay between these schools – each team comprising 2 boys and 2 girls. At one point they were neck and neck but eventually Bishop Cornish pulled in front to win the race and be the qualifiers to represent ARENA at the Cornwall School Games. Many thanks to Tamar Trotters, staff and leaders for helping with this event.

Y3/4 Festival  March 2nd 2017

New skills were learned and enjoyment was had by both children and sports leaders, who led the activities.

Area school Sports 2016
On Thursday 23rd of June, thirty of our most talented athletes, travelled to Liskeard to compete in the annual Area Sports competition. There were some outstanding performances, both team and individual in a whole range of sporting events, such as sprints, shuttle and circular relays, long jump and throwing. Particular mention should go to Abbie R, who stepped in at the last minute and helped the Year 6 girls to victory in the circular relay.
During the throwing event, schools were invited to select a team to take part in a tug of war competition, (just for fun) and for what our team lacked in stature, they certainly made up for in pure grit and determination! Go St Stephens!
At the end of a fabulous evening of sport, came the results and we are delighted to say, that St Stephens came in an incredible 2nd place, against some very tough opposition. We are incredibly proud of how our athletes performed and in the way they showed support for both their team mates and  the competitors from other schools, their behaviour was a credit to the school.Well done to everyone who took part and for the staff and parents that came to support them.
