Learning Support and SEND
At St Stephens Primary School, we believe that 'Excellence is in Everyone'.
In order to elicit this, many steps are taken to support children through their learning journey. These steps will include quality teaching for all, but children with SEND will require extra support at times. At St Stephens this support will be delivered in a range of ways - through group or 1:1 intervention, through adaptations to work or support in class and by working with external agencies to enhance the provision we can offer. At all stages support will be coordinated by our SENDCo and conducted in collaboration with parents, the child and the school staff who work with them both in and out of class.
St Stephens Community Primary School has a highly committed SEND team. This includes the SENDCo, Parent Support Adviser (PSA), autism champion, HLTAs trained in delivering speech and language intervention, practitioners trained in delivering Headstart, FunFit, ECAR and TAs or HLTAs assigned full time to every class in the school. We also employ additional staff so that, where appropriate, we can offer smaller ‘nurture’ classes in maths and English for children who may be finding it difficult to achieve their full potential within a larger class.

Special Educational Needs Information
At St Stephens Primary School we strive to support all children to enable them to achieve at school.
In order to do this, many steps are taken to support them through their learning journey.
Quality teaching is vital; however for some children there are occasions when further additional support may be needed to help them achieve their targets.
Roles & Responsibilities of the Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENDCo)
Our SENDCo is responsible for the operation of the Special Educational Needs Policy and co-ordination of specific provision made to support individual children with SEND.
We liaise with staff to monitor the pupil’s progress and plan further interventions where progress is slower than expected. We regularly have contact with a wide range of external agencies that are able to give more specialised advice. If you have any concerns regarding SEND matters do not hesitate to contact us.
There are many SEND terms that are abbreviated which can lead to confusion (even for us!).
What is a local offer?
First introduced in the Green Paper (March 2011) the local offer identifies services available to support disabled children, children with SEND and their families.
How do we know if children need extra help?
We know when pupils need help if:
- Concerns are raised by parents/carers and teachers or the child
- Limited progress is being made
- There is a change in the pupils behaviour or progress
- When pupils have identified SEND, we work with people who already know them and use information already available to support their needs
What shall I do if I think my child may have SEND?
The class teacher is the initial point of contact for responding to parental concerns. The class teacher will then liaise with the SENDCo and a way forward will be established.
How does the school involve pupils and parents/carers in meeting SEND?
- Planning and review meetings
- Advice on how to support learning at home
- Regular contact between home and school
- Individual pupil/teacher conversations
What support is available?
High quality class teaching
- All learning opportunities are differentiated
- Support with managing and understanding behaviour
- Support with health needs and/or disabilities
- Whole school curriculum adaptation to support inclusion
- Specialist teaching (group or individual as appropriate)
- Consideration as to how children learn best
- Collaborative working with outside agencies as required
How accessible are we to children with SEND?
- Physical accessibility
- Facilities for personal care
- Specialist teaching areas
How will the school know how well children with SEND are doing?
Children’s progress will be assessed in line with the schools assessment policy, in addition children may have individual plans and provision mapping as appropriate. We also have additional assessment resources to help us break down and measure achievement in children whose progress has been slow.
How will the school support children with SEND to change classes or move onto a new school?
Teachers liaise with parents and carers sharing information and preparing the pupil in advance of the move. Teachers and the SENDCo pay particular attention to preparing pupils with SEND for transfer to secondary school. Information is shared from primary SENDCo to secondary SENDCo prior to transfer.
How are school staff trained and supported to work with children with SEND?
We identify training needs and call on the services of specialist providers in line with our school development plan.
What support and training is available to parents and carers?
- Parent learning support groups
- Informal parents coffee mornings/afternoons
- Family Support Worker
- Occasional training offered by outside agencies
How does the school ensure that children with SEND are included in all activities at school?
Pupils with SEND are encouraged to participate in all school activities. Where possible, adaptations are made to ensure the inclusion of all children.
